Purpose: We aimed to identify the association between the duration of smartphone usage and depression in fourth-grade elementary and first-grade middle school students. Further, we investigated the mediating effects of sleep duration and aggression in this relationship.
Methods: This study utilized the data from the first year of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018. Among the fourth-grade elementary and first-grade middle school students, 4,925 people, who answered all main questions, were selected as study participants. Correlation, multiple linear regression, and mediation analyses were employed to examine the relationship between the duration of smartphone usage and depression and the mediating effects of sleep duration and aggression.
Results: We observed a statistically significant relationship between the duration of smartphone usage and depression on both weekdays and weekends among fourth graders in elementary school and first graders in middle school. Mediating effects were not significant in fourth graders of elementary school, while first graders in middle school demonstrated significant indirect effects of sleep duration (¥â=0.008, p£¼0.001) and aggression (¥â=0.026, p£¼0.001) on weekdays and only aggression (¥â=0.023, p£¼0.001) on weekends.
Conclusions: Long duration of smartphone usage was associated with increased depression levels in both fourth-grade elementary and first-grade middle school students on both weekdays and weekends. Mediating effects of sleep duration and aggression were significant only among first graders in middle school.
